Historic Castine Home
351 Castine Road . Castine, Maine 04421

This well-preserved 1800s double-chimney cape on Hatch Cove is a Castine landmark. Perched on a hill overlooking Castine and its harbor, this historic home on two acres is two miles from Castine village and has year round water views from all three floors.

The house was built in the first two decades of the 1800s by a family with substantial land holdings in Castine and mid-coast Maine. Local history has it that it once served as a schoolhouse. The home’s high ceilings, Indian shutters, double chimneys and detailing suggest that the original owners were prosperous. A later addition of a wide Western-facing front porch (likely in the early 1900s) does not obscure the wide fantail front door, or the exceptionally large windows. The interior of the house has been largely preserved, with wide pine floors, wainscoting, Indian shutters and period mantel pieces on four of the five fireplaces. Much of the original glass is still intact, with diamond engravings on some panes.

UPDATING:
Past owners have worked to preserve this historic Castine house, and inspectors always note its “good bones”. In 2006-2008 the current owners gutted and remodeled the bathrooms and kitchen, adding a window sitting area in the kitchen. A half-bath was created in the center of the house, and new basement stairs installed making the sunny basement with exposed beams perfect for an office and exercise room or extra bedroom.

During the remodeling, most of the old plumbing and electrical wiring were replaced while carefully preserving the original plaster. A new high-efficiency furnace and hot-water heating system was installed. The newly-remodeled kitchen has radiant heat in the floor, plus an auxiliary heating system. Professional architect plans have been drawn for possible main floor master suite and large garage.
