Historic Castine Home
351 Castine Road . Castine, Maine 04421

Exterior: Western facing front porch overlooking lupine field and Hatch Cove. This porch was most likely added in the early 1900s.

Dining Room:
The fireplace in the dining room backs up to the living room fireplace and draws well. The walls are the original plaster and the windows have some diamond pen etchings.

Living Room:
This is the original fireplace and has a kettle suspended from the old crane. The beehive oven door is there but the oven itself was removed at some point to make a closet. Printing over the fireplace is a quote from Kahlil Gibran "Your house shall be not an anchor but a mast."

Kitchen:
This lovely kitchen has a high wood ceiling with exposed beams. The cherry and painted kitchen cabinets are new. The appliances are also new: Bosch range and dishwasher; Jenn-Air french door refrigerator. The counter top and sink are granite. It is easy kitchen to work in with lots of counter and cupboard space. There is a wonderful view of the cove from the window in the breakfast nook. The heat is in the painted/stained floor with back-up heat under the benches by the table.

Library:
A wonderfully cozy room with Indian shutters, lots of built-in shelves and bookcases and a water view. The new hot water heating system uses this flue so the fireplace is not working but with a new flue could be made functional.

Sunroom:
Bright and sunny, this room has been used for a TV room, game room and gathering place. This fireplace backs up to the one in the library.

Second Floor:
Master Bedroom with private bath plus two guest rooms with shared bath. The master bedroom is south facing with water views. The painted floors are the original wide boards. Doors and hardware are also original.

Basement:
Half of the basement is finished with exposed floor joists, sunny windows and an exterior door. The two rooms make it perfect for a playroom and office or guest room. There is easy access to the half bath on the main floor and with the closing of a door can make for a very private guest space. The floor is painted cement. The other half of the basement has storage, utilities and laundry area.

Half Bath

Front Stairs:
When in doubt as to whether one should carpet stairs or paint them, the only answer seems to be to paint them to look like carpet!
